Mikki dreamed the future. Every night, she saw the serpent—ancient, massive, coiled in the mountain mist. She saw it swallow everyone she knew. And she saw her boyfriend Rod and her best friend Safina shove her into its jaws. They didn't believe her. Not until their car broke down on a closed bridge and they were stranded in those woods. Mikki had prepared: snake repellent, a fortified basement, emergency supplies. They laughed at her. Only the siblings Buffie and Joey stayed by her side. One by one, the arrogant ones fell. Rescue teams. Rod and Safina. All the people who thought they knew better. When the serpent finally rose, Mikki walked out of those woods—with Buffie and Joey, and nothing but ashes behind them.
